Out-and-Back Course
Bienveneda /Hub
The trailhead is at the intersection of Bienveneda and Via Floresta in Pacific Palisades. The single track Leacock Trail soon meets the Bienveneda Trail which then takes us to the Temescal Ridge Trail. We turn left here and follow it to The Hub (the turnaround point). On the return, we bypass the Bienveneda intersection and proceed another .6 miles to the intersection with the Leacock Trail, where we turn right and gently descend to our cars.
Kanan Dume to Encinal Canyon Road
This run introduces us to a couple of vertebra of the Backbone Trail. The Kanan Dume Trailhead is reached by turning east on Kanan Dume Road off PCH. Go 4.7 miles and turn left into the parking lot just after the tunnel. The trail heads toward Encinal Canyon under a canopy of trees. It is a very well maintained single-track trail. Then, we rise from the canyon to the intersection with Encinal Canyon Road, then head back to the start. The trail is well-maintained, sparsely used and a joy to experience.
Puerco Canyon to Corral Canyon and Back
The Trailhead for this run is on PCH, about 3/4 mile past (west of) the intersection of Puerco Canyon Road. There is free parking on PCH and a nice parking lot at the trailhead for $3.00. The start is on steep single track trail which connects to Puerco Canyon Fire Road. The uphill continues left on Mesa Peak Fire Road until Corral Canyon parking lot--The Welcome Turnaround Point. Returning to the start on the same path offers a majestic view of the ocean and nearby Channel Islands.
Serrano Road/Chamberlain Rock
The trailhead is reached by turning right on Deer Creek Rd.
Big Sur
We will start from Big Sur Station at 7:30 AM. It will be a 10-mile jaunt to the hot springs, and 10 more to return to civilization. You can do it. There is a 10-mile (round trip) alternative to Ventana Camp. Sunday offers a beautiful 8 mile loop at Molera Beach.
Hondo Canyon
Hondo Canyon This run begins at the Backbone trail head intersection with Old Topanga Road about 1/4 mile west of the Inn of the 7th Ray. There is room to park 5 or 6 cars at the trail head. If we have a larger group than that, instead of turning left on Old Topanga Road, continue on Topanga Road and veer to the right on Entrada, and park in the lot. The 1st half is mostly uphill and follows the Backbone Trail through some lush areas, and through the former site of a marijuana farm, but remnants of the old crop are not to be found.
Ortega Hwy.--Morgan Creek
This is a gentle out and back 10 mile run from the Country Store off the
Sycamore Canyon/Serrano Valley Tr./Chamborlin Rock
This run starts and ends in Sycamore Canyon, climbs up the Serrano Canyon Trail to Serrano Valley at an elevation of 1303 ft. with it's majestic views of beautiful Serrano Valley with rolling grassland meadows that are a lush green in winter and a golden brown in summer. From Serrano Valley we take a right onto Old Boney Trail, then another right on Chamberlain Trail, thru lush switchbacks up to Chamborlin Rock. This is the turnaround point, and from here it is all downhill and shady with panoramic views and endorphins coursing through your arteries.
Los Liones / Parker Overlook / Trippet Ranch
The trail at Los Liones climbs steeply for the first 2 miles through lush vegetation and ivy covered trees. A 1/2 mile diversion to Parker Overlook offers a beautiful view of the ocean and Santa Monica Bay. Then we continue on East Topanga Fireroad to Trippet Ranch and its water fountain and luxurious bathrooms. This is the turnaround for our out and back run.
Westridge / Mulholland / Sullivan Ridge Gate
This run is an out and back that starts at the end of Westridge Road and follows the fire road to Mulholland and the park at a former Nike Radar Station with a rest room and drinking fountain. From there, we then go west (left) on Mulholland to the trailhead gate at the junction of Mulholland and Sullivan Ridge. After reaching the gate, we turn around and return via the same route we took to get to the Sullivan Ridge Gate.
